Extension Project

Due to growth in early 2018 the Church decided that they wanted to extend to the front of the current building. The main thrust behind this was to better serve our community. You can see what this could look like by comparing the 'present' and 'proposed' pictures below. You can also scroll down to see some questions and answers about this project.

Proposed

Community Coffee Shop

Scene 1One of the most exciting opportunities the new build gives us is to run a coffee shop. The extended lounge with glass frontage opening up to a small patio area is ideal for this. This also gives us the opportunity to extend our existing services - Rock-a-Bye-Babies, Little Rockets and Kidz Klub.

Soft Play

Adjoining the newly extended lounge, will be a designated soft play area for toddlers and pre-schoolers to entertain themselves whilst parents/carers are using the lounge facility. This area will be divided from the lounge by a glass wall in order to reduce sound but keep maximum visibility.

Defibrillator

With 60,000 cardiac arrests happening each year in the UK and half of those occurring outside of a hospital environment, you can start to see the importance of having a publicly accessible life saving device like this in Edwalton. Especially as the nearest one is out at Lady Bay Bridge - a fifteen minute drive there and back which may be the difference between life and death.

Food Bank

Last year the foodbank network distributed over 1.3million three day emergency food supplies to people in crisis, a 13% increase on the previous year. 484,026 of these went to children. Every day people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food makes a big difference, with foodbanks helping prevent crime, housing loss, family breakdown and mental health problems.

Upper Lounge

Up in the roof we plan to convert the loft space into a multi-purpose ‘lounge’ area that can be used for general meetings, small groups and a congregational point for young people. It also gives us much needed breakout space for The Rock's youth group to meet on a Sunday morning.

Storage

The loft space also provides us with the opportunity for much needed storage at The Hub. It’s not the most exciting part of the project but is essential for the smooth running of
various activities.

Meeting Room

A meeting room  will be located on the first floor. This will be availble for hire, or free of charge for local charities.

Questions & Answers (updated November 2018)

Have all the relevant permissions been granted for this work?

Yes. Planning applications were approved in January 2019.

Can I see plans?
Yes. Just scroll down the page a little further.
How long will it take to build?
For the full plan, builders estimate 4-5 months.
Will there be any disruption to existing activities taking place at The Hub?

There will be a lot of activity to the front of the building, therefore the likelihood of accessing the building here is low, but we will confirm. We will probably keep the pre-school running and relocate our Sunday Services. We will confirm the plan in due course.

When will building work start?

We would like to start as soon as possible as we have hit capacity already in some of our activities and are ready to start new ones, but it’s all dependant on how quickly we can raise funds. We are currently looking into this.

Where is the money coming from?
To date, The Rock Church has designated £40,000 of reserves towards the project, the congregation have also raised/pledged another £40,000. In addition, we have hired a fund-raiser to help us find suitable grants. Finally, we are looking for people in our community to take ownership and give towards the project if they are able.
What happens if targets are not reached?

All giving will go in to a restricted fund assigned to our community work, so even if we can’t start as soon as we want, all monies will remain designated.

Who can I speak to if I have any other questions?
Feel free to drop in at The Hub anytime the office is open, call/text us on 07913 426051 or get in touch by completing our contact form.
